384 U.S. 436

foundvolume 384U.S.page 436

This citation exists in our library, and no opinion in our treatment table says it overruled this one. That is NOT a clean bill of health: the table only catches explicit overruling language in opinions we hold, so it misses a great deal. Treat it as one signal, not as a Shepard's or KeyCite result.

Later history

Our treatment table is built by reading the opinions we hold for explicit overruling language and attaching it to the citation named right after it. It is deliberately high-precision and low-recall: a flag means a later opinion SAID this, and the absence of a flag means only that we did not find such a sentence in the opinions we hold. It is not a substitute for Shepard's or KeyCite, and it has no "questioned" or "distinguished" tier at all.

Does it support your sentence?

A citation that exists can still be cited for something the court never said. Paste the sentence you are citing 384 U.S. 436 for, and the check reads the passages we hold of that decision: it answers supports only when a sentence in the opinion carries your proposition, and it hands back that sentence verbatim. Any quotation inside your own sentence is checked against the opinion's text too.

Off on this host

The support check is a metered endpoint (POST /api/v1/citations/support), so this page does not call it from the browser unless the operator sets SUPPORT_CHECK_IN_BROWSER=1. It is off here. You can still run it with an API key. The endpoint's docs show the request, and the rate card says what a query costs.

One citation at a time, or a whole brief

This page answers for one citation. Paste a whole brief and every case citation in it is checked the same way, free and with nothing stored. The same checks run on every answer the API returns: see how grounding works and what the library holds.
